Welcome to the Art Gallery of Stephen Emms - I live in Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario, Canada. I am a watercolour/acrylic artist and photographer. My subject matter is not limited but reflects the beauty of our natural world. I have worked outdoors as a Fish & Wildlife Technician and Conservation Officer, often in remote locations throughout the beautiful province of Ontario. My education and career contributed to my intimate knowledge of the ecological world and its relationship to humans. My focus is watercolour painting and photography of the natural environment around us, particularly Northern Ontario, with Lake Superior an inspiration. While I sell artwork and take on commissioned work, my work is created for pleasure and well-being. Nothing gives me more self-gratification than producing a piece of art or a photograph that captures the scene I have witnessed and brings it to life for others to experience. To that end, I travel throughout the region seeking out locations that inspire, suggest harmony, and get into focus on a world we too often take for granted.

Primarily Canadian landscapes and the environment, particularly of Northwestern Ontario, and Lake Superior.
You can have your favorite location painted for you. This is a painting of a the shipwreck Pesuta on a remote beach of Haida Gwaii. Custom painting done for the individual photographing the wreck.
I will do custom artwork; the price reflects the subject's size and complexities. All you need to do is supply a good photograph of the subject you desire to be painted. Once this is done, we will communicate to decide the size and pricing of the original artwork.
Commissioned artwork is an interpretation of the image artistically; it is not intended to be an “exact copy” of the image. That is what a photograph is for. The painting will reflect my artistic style, like the above painting done for a couple of their favourite spots. You will forever have a unique piece of art with a personal meaning for you and others to enjoy.
A couple walking in solitude on a remote beach, Lake Superior. Art that means something to you.
The painting will not be an exact duplication, it is an interpretation that will depict the scene and the subject.
Atikokan
This is a watercolour painting of an Aboriginal spearhead discovered in Quetico Provincial Park, Northwestern Ontario. The park commissioned several paintings for its interpretative program. These paintings are now on display throughout the park. Prints and cards are available on this website.
Prince of Wales public school was built in 1876 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. It was closed in 2011, and the property was sold in 2016. However, this small school had special meaning and memories to many. This painting was done for one of those people.
Warrior Hill, Lac La Croix. Quetico Provincial Park is a large granite rock hill rising over 300 meters from the shoreline of Lac la Croix. History says that Ojibwa used the outcrop of rock for many purposes, such as a lookout for enemies like the Dakota and testing for young men. To test their worth, Ojibwa warriors would run up to the top of the hill to retrieve an item and then back down; the first to dive into the lake would win the contest. The Ojibwa also used this site for a vision quest. On the left are some canoeists that give a perspective of the size of this rock.
